News November 18, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Coach Grant resigns as Head Football Coach of South Gate High School November 18, 2009, Los Angeles, CA, Coach Grant resigns as Head Football Coach of South Gate High School sighting differences of philosophy with the new principal. Grant has been in the process of rebuilding the program after taking over two years ago, the team had not won a game in nearly three seasons when Grant took over. This past season the team won two games, had a high powered exciting offense, and lost several games by three or less points. The culture was changing and the team average G.P.A rose from 2.2 to nearly 3.0. He wrote several grants which helped the team acquire its first new uniforms in 15 years and received new helmets and shoulder pads as well. Several players were named to the All-Eastern League Team. According to Coach Grant “I know that I am leaving the South Gate Football Program in much better shape than I found it. It has been challenging, working to change the culture, develop players and returning the program to its rightful place among the elite. But, with the change in administration – the new principal has his own concepts of what an athletic program is all about. The job is not complete but I must move on, and I am looking for a place to continue to help young men grow into productive citizens. Coach Grant is a Certificated English Teacher and will be reviewing new opportunities. Coach Grant has been a member of the board of directors for the NAAAA for the past fourteen, which presents the award for the top African American High School Male Scholar Athlete in the nation the “Watkins Award”, www.naaaa.com. Coach Grant is a former professional football player having played for the New York Jets, NFL and in the CFL. Coach Grant is also working with a university in Mexico City to host an American Football Clinic and Camp the first week in April, 2010.
