“The Alliance” Announces LAUSD teacher Reginald Grant as Co-Chairman of the Board

On Tuesday, September 2nd, 2003 the National Alliance of African American Athletes announced the reorganization of its Board of Directors and names board member Reginald Grant as Co-Chairman of the Board. In an effort to become a more effective board, it has split the duties of the Chairman of the Board into Co-Chairperson positions. Andrea Warner will serve as the Co-Chairperson and focus on policy and administration.. Reginald Grant will focus on fund development. J. Everette Pearsall - National Executive Director said, “ The organization now in it’s fourteenth year needs to maximize the strengths of our Board of Directors.”

Reginald Grant is a Los Angeles school teacher and Ambassador for the Los Angles Unified School Districts - Teaching Fellows Program. Mr. Grant is a former professional athlete (New York Jets and Ottawa Rough Riders, CFL) who has served on the board for the past five years. Mr. Grant is a former software executive and businessman who has served on the boards of numerous Southern California non-profit organizations. Mr. Grant was recently featured in Time Magazine’s May 12th, 2003 Issue -pages 52-56 and in the Los Angeles Times, on February 10, 2003. Mr. Grant works with the Los Angels Chapter of the NFL Players Association’s (Retired) -Goals For Life Foundation and coordinated this summers Rose Bowl Academy Football Camp & Conference.

Andrea Warner currently works with the PA District Attorney’s Association in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Warner has served as Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the past five years. Ms. Warner has led the organization from a regional to a nationally recognized organization.

The National Alliance of African Athletes is best known as the creator of the Franklin D. Watkins Award. The Watkins Award is known as the premier award for African American scholar athletes. Notable Watkins Award Winners and Finalist include; Robert Tate-Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens, LaVar Arrington-the number two overall pick in the 2000 NFL draft, Shane Battier-the number six overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft, Grant Irons (1997 Winner)- defensive end with the Buffalo Bills, Raki Nelson-former Philadelphia Eagle, NFL, Ronald Curry ( 1998 Winner) Oakland Raiders - , Deryck Toles (1999 Winner) Penn State, Marcus Houston (2000 Winner) Colorado State, Michael-Jordan Craven (2001 Winner) Stanford, Marcus McCutcheon (2002 Winner) Stanford, Sam Cheatham (2003 Winner) Northwestern and Chris Lewis, Luke Powell,J.R. Lemon, Lorenzo Alexander and Mark Bradford of Stanford.
